Phil Marsh attended the Guitar Institute of Technology after studying music in college, and is currently the professor of Jazz Guitar at GVSU.  Phil is band leader of The Hip Pocket and writes most of the arrangements for the band.

James Bates, along with Phil, has been there since the band’s inception.  He has earned his definitive reputation as a male vocalist with the best groups in West Michigan for over 25 years.  He has the natural ability to develop a rapport with audiences everywhere.

Jennifer Ederer draws her experience from dance and singing.  Her excitement and enthusiasm drive the group to new levels of performance.  Jenn is also the owner of Modern Day Floral, located in GR.

Kevin Gillespie has performed throughout the country, creating a demand for his abilities.  A devote follower of the Jaco order, Kevin lays it down like no other bassist.

Paul Lesinski fills out the keyboards with funky organ to lush string parts.  Paul’s exceptional ability has made him one of the most sought after keyboard players in West Michigan.

Eddie Eicher is one of the most in-demand drummers in West Michigan.  With a strong background in jazz, funk, rock, and power-pop, Eddie has performed live and is on the recordings of numerous local artists including Karisa Wilson, David Molinari, Fiction Switch, Merry Bomb, AnDro, and others.  You can learn more about Eddie and his various musical projects at www.EddieEicher.com

Tom Stansell plays alto sax, but also cranks out the lower edge of the horns on bari sax.  You can’t find too many players who can nail bari parts like Tower of Power’s Doc Kupka.

Jeff Baird, retired Air Force, plays the tenor sax in a smooth, funky and melodically infectious style.  When not playing with The Hip Pocket, Jeff plays in several groups and also plays with The Temptations when they’re around.

Joe Mason started playing trombone at the age of eight.  During high school, Joe was a member of the All-State Jazz Band and the University of Michigan Youth Band.  While attending the University of Michigan, he played in the Symphonic Band, Orchestra and Wind Ensemble.  After moving to Grand Rapids he played for ten years in the West Shore Symphony Orchestra and free lanced with various bands in West Michigan.  Joe has recorded with Israel Houghton, Marvin Sapp, and Ken Reynolds among others.  He is stoked to be a part of The Hip Pocket.

Mike Truszkowski is the high school band director at Spring Lake Public Schools.  He has a masters degree in music education from CMU and has chops that don’t quit.

The band would not be complete without soundman Paul Andre.  He monitors the wireless gear, he keeps the sound thumpin’, and even adds some background vocals on occasion too.
